For almost 40 years, EDA Planning + Urban Design has been involved in park design across scales and capacities. Projects have included preparation of high level regional open space planning documents, down to neighbourhood open space development/renewal strategies and park master plans. Regardless of the size of the project, our refined process enables us to effectively examine existing and prospective open space systems, and determine the spatial opportunities and constraints based on demographics, existing usage, trends, and goals of the client.
Excellence in site design requires a close working relationship between the project architect, engineers, and landscape architect. To be effective, site design must respond to functional and user requirements while recognizing building design language, site context and surrounding environment. The design must provide for efficient use of the space, and accommodate the desired site development program, and consider climatic factors, circulation and user needs.
We have provided numerous developers with design and construction management assistance in relation to commercial / retail facilities. We have worked in many of the region's jurisdictions, with knowledge of the approval processes of each. This enables us to deliver exceptional designs and services, while shortening timelines for approvals and construction, and ultimately reducing costs.
Project experience with sustainable design includes naturalization, LEED, green globe and LID projects, storm water management approaches including; bio-retention, bio-swales, Other considerations include, planting for heat island effect mitigation and optimized energy performance, site material selection and detailing that considers pre- and post– consumer use of materials, and regional sources, as well as the specification of sustainable construction techniques.
Public consultation is a complex and integral part of the design process. Our experience includes engagement ranging from formal presentations, group workshops, design charrettes, one on one interviews, and various types of surveys. Our ability to produce clear, concise and intriguing presentation material has enabled us to garner exciting ideas and solutions to design challenges from communities and stakeholders. The ability to create presentation material, such as figures and diagrams that simplify complex ideas and design challenges, has helped us foster collaboration and build consensus in our projects.
Design Guidelines and Standards provide a framework for ongoing development to help ensure that a common vision for an area is designed and respected. They can address any given component of a site, and can be as specific as desired. Our experience includes many design guideline reports for a variety of project types, including: streetscape and downtown development projects; park and trail projects; and facility appearance projects Theme development is normally an important component of design guideline projects, and can be developed to relate to the history, culture, or natural environment of the project location.
Many communities are now revitalizing the role of their rivers and waterfronts through careful planning of appropriate uses, and redevelopment of adjacent properties into publicly accessible parkland. Our expertise is demonstrated through the breadth of our completed projects, ranging in scope and scales from high level planning documents such as Area Redevelopment Plans, Feasibility Studies down to Master Plans, to detailed design and construction document preparation. In all projects of this nature, community and stakeholder consultation is a key component contributing to successful outcomes.
Communication between the various users and a clear priorities and objectives are very important in any development or project on a school site. We have been involved in a variety of campus and school site planning and design projects, with experience ranging from long term comprehensive site planning, through to detailed site design and implementation for individual buildings on campus.
Our experience and services include subdivision planning, design, and construction implementation for a number of Developers in the Edmonton Region for decades. We have worked in various regional jurisdictions, and therefore have substantial experience with the approval processes in each, allowing us to deliver exceptional designs and services, while shortening timelines for approvals and construction, and ultimately reducing costs. Our landscape architects have impressive design credentials, while our technical staff has extensive experience in the preparation of subdivision design plans, construction administration and approval coordination.
We consider trail planning to be one of our design specialties. Our extensive experience extends to all stages from planning and design to implementation and construction management. We have overseen the development of trails in a range of situations - from back country mountain hiking trails to high-use urban multi-use trails. Our hands on approach and comprehensive review of site conditions factor in the success of all trail projects. Some of thse include but are not limited to: biophysical issues such as soils, drainage, topography, and spatial and visual opportunities provided by each individual site. Our general philosophy maximizes opportunities provided by the land no matter the scale of the project or its rural or urban context.
Our Visual Impact Assessment experience has ranged from regional land use management recommendations to site specific analysis. Our clients include all levels of government, special interest groups, and private corporations. Our work has included the preparation of visual resource assessment and technical documentation, impact documentation including text and graphics, hearing evidence, specialized courtroom graphics and video presentations, and CADD and simulation modelling.
Our planning and design experience include public and private sector projects in both development of new cemeteries and improvement of those that exist. Our involvement in includes master planning, concept design, facility planning, site development, as well as detail design of specific elements within cemeteries such as entry gates, sanctuaries, columbaria, memorials, information kiosks and mapping and location systems.
Our experience with signage design and environmental graphics is broad, ranging across: identification signage, interpretive signage and exhibits, and wayfinding and sign system manuals/guidelines. Our involvement starts at the planning stage and continues into detail design and through to implementation. Relevant scope of work includes project types such as Municipal identification, residential identity for neighbourhoods, parks and recreation facilities, and interpretive signage and exhibits.
EDA has been involved in a broad variety of roadway projects, from the Roadway Naturalization Master Plan for the City of Edmonton, to streetscape revitalizations for many communities throughout Alberta. Each project requires a thorough understanding of; the existing situation, adjacent land uses, impact assessment, the appropriateness of native versus ornamental planting, required setbacks, sightlines for safety, and climatic factors such as wind and snow accumulation. Ease of maintenance and capital budgets are also important considerations.
Successful design of a water playground must consider many factors including location and site context, the type of system, other site amenities, site servicing, safety, maximization of play opportunities, cost effectiveness, and ease of maintenance. While many exciting prefabricated water play components are now available on the market, this has not eliminated the need for a comprehensive site design. Construction of water playgrounds is very complex, and a thorough set of construction drawings is required, and a formal tender process recommended.
Programming, planning, site design and development are all critical factors for the success of sports venues and special events. We have worked with sports associations, service groups, and all levels of government for both the upgrading of existing facilities and the planning and design of new developments. Our project experience ranges from new multi-use sports field parks to major track and field facilities and special event venues. We have notably worked on sports facilities for numerous international sporting events including The World IAAF Track and Field Championships, World ITU Triathlon Championship, The World University Games, and the 1978 Commonwealth Games, among many others.
